The launch was notably abrupt. Anbernic typically teases new models weeks or months in advance, but the RG 35 appeared with no prior marketing. It also coincided with the recent release of the RG 55G1, a higher-end device that has only been available for a few days. The two handhelds target different audiences, so they are unlikely to cannibalize each other’s sales.
Hardware-wise, the RG 35 is a single-configuration device: 1 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. It is unclear whether the storage is a soldered chip or an SD card, though the presence of two microSD slots suggests the latter may be involved. The processor is the Rockchip 3326, a chip introduced in 2018 on a 28-nm process, featuring four Cortex-A35 cores clocked up to 1.5 GHz and a "Mali-G31-MP2" GPU. Anbernic states this is sufficient for emulating consoles up to the Sega Mega Drive, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Nintendo DS, Dreamcast, and PSP, though the limited RAM may be a bottleneck on more demanding systems.
The 3.5-inch IPS panel offers 640×480 resolution, full viewing angles, and OCA full lamination. This resolution is well-suited for older console games, as it allows for double the native resolution on some retro systems. The device includes a 3,200 mAh battery, which Anbernic claims provides up to seven hours of gameplay. Audio is handled by a single built-in speaker or a 3.5 mm headphone jack. There is no built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, but Anbernic notes that an external Wi-Fi module can be used for features like multiplayer.
The RG 35 is available now via Anbernic’s online shop for $37.99. It comes in gray, transparent black, or transparent pink. Unlike other recent releases, there is no early-bird discount. The device measures 128 × 81 × 22 mm (folded) and weighs 191 g, with digital control buttons and two analog joysticks.
