SteamOS 3.9 goes stable with Linux 7.2 and KDE Plasma 6.7
Valve has officially transitioned SteamOS version 3.9 to the stable channel. The 3.9.5 build, which was previously available only through beta testing, is now being rolled out to all users, replacing version 3.8.
Kernel and Desktop Environment Updates
The most significant technical shift is the move to a newer Arch Linux base featuring Linux kernel 7.2. The desktop environment has also received a major bump, moving to KDE Plasma 6.7.3 from version 6.4.3. To improve network reliability, Valve has switched the default Wi-Fi backend to wpa_supplicant, aiming to facilitate smoother reconnections after the device wakes from sleep.
Additionally, the update includes modifications to the bootloader and enhanced support for virtual machines utilizing accelerated graphics via virtio-gpu and Venus.
Hardware Compatibility and Bug Fixes
SteamOS 3.9 expands its reach beyond the Steam Deck. The Legion Go 2 receives preliminary brightness controls and a fix for crashes occurring during Forza Horizon 6 launches. Users on Intel Panther Lake systems will see compatibility fixes for ELDEN RING and DARK SOULS III. Valve has also addressed suspend/resume issues on systems equipped with AMD RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 discrete GPUs, alongside fixing excessive fan speeds on certain ASUS devices after waking up.
For Steam Machine and Steam Frame, improvements include better wireless adapter support, VR frame limiting fixes, and Steam Remote Play optimizations for setups without an external display. While kernel-level hibernation support has been added, it remains unavailable in Game Mode and is currently disabled on the Steam Deck due to an unresolved driver issue.
Power Management and Security
The stable release incorporates several refinements from the 3.9.5 beta, including improved idle power consumption on the Steam Deck when no audio is playing, as well as various security and stability updates. The update also restores Android binder IPC support.
