Steam Machine mod turns faceplate into magnetic controller dock
A hardware modder has transformed the Steam Machine's interchangeable faceplate into a practical add-on. User NefariousnessWhole25 from Reddit replaced the standard front panel with a 3D-printed docking station for the Steam Controller. This modification does not affect the device's functionality but adds a new utility.
How the mod works
The new faceplate uses the built-in magnet of the Steam Machine to lock onto the chassis. The controller is held vertically by magnets in the bundled puck adapter, which are strong enough to keep it secure without additional support. The puck itself stays in place via a tight fit and a small lip, further secured by the USB cable.
The 3D-printed design perfectly matches the form of the Steam Controller, ensuring correct positioning and contact with the charging pogo pins. Additionally, the modded faceplate can serve as a standalone docking station thanks to an integrated kickstand, making it useful even for non-Steam Machine owners.
