SPARKLE launches Thunderbolt 5 eGPU box with GeForce RTX 3060
SPARKLE has officially launched the TCX-280DF/RTX3060-12GB, an external GPU (eGPU) enclosure featuring a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 with 12GB of GDDR6 memory. Priced at ¥180,800 in Japan, this device is designed to transform laptops and mini PCs into capable graphics workstations by leveraging the latest connectivity standards.
The standout feature of the TCX-280DF/RTX3060-12GB is its support for Thunderbolt 5. This interface offers a theoretical maximum bandwidth of 120Gbps, with an effective bidirectional transfer rate of 80Gbps. For users upgrading from older systems, this represents a significant leap in data throughput compared to the previous Thunderbolt 4 standard (40Gbps). The manufacturer claims that a single cable connection is sufficient to turn a notebook PC or mini PC environment into a powerful graphics workstation.
Beyond raw bandwidth, the enclosure includes practical power delivery features. It supports USB Power Delivery (PD), capable of supplying up to 85W directly to the connected laptop. This feature is particularly useful for thin-and-light devices that struggle with battery life under heavy load. Additionally, the device supports Thunderbolt Share, allowing two PCs to share a display or transfer data simultaneously via the eGPU.
In terms of connectivity, the rear panel is equipped with one Thunderbolt 5 port (Upstream) supporting 85W PD input, and one Thunderbolt 5 port (Downstream) supporting 15W PD output. For video output, there are four DisplayPort 1.4 ports available. The USB section includes two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, and networking is handled by a single 2.5GbE LAN port.
The physical dimensions of the unit are 170mm x 149mm x 59mm, with a total weight of 1,600g including the vertical stand. The enclosure is compatible with Windows 11 and Windows 10. In the box, users will find a dedicated 280W power supply set, an 0.8-meter Thunderbolt 5 cable, the vertical stand, and a quick start guide.
This release marks SPARKLE's continued expansion in the eGPU market, following their earlier launch of the TBX-850FA Thunderbolt 5 enclosure and other USB-C docks like the TC-9411M. While the RTX 3060 is a mid-range card from last generation, the integration with Thunderbolt 5 ensures that users can fully utilize its capabilities without being bottlenecked by the connection interface.
