Sony Clarifies 10% PlayStation Disc Production Dip

Sony has clarified that physical disc production for PlayStation will decrease by 10% by 2028, correcting widespread rumors of a 90% capacity cut following the company's decision to phase out physical releases for new titles.

The controversy originated from a misinterpretation of remarks made by Dietmar Tanzer, an executive at Sony Digital Audio Disc Corporation (DADC), during an interview with an Austrian broadcaster. Media outlets initially reported that optical disc production at facilities such as the Thalgau plant would plummet to 10% of current capacity. A DADC spokesperson subsequently clarified that Tanzer had actually anticipated an overall product volume decline of 10% by 2028, emphasizing the preposition "by" rather than a reduction to 10% of existing output.

In July, PlayStation announced plans to discontinue physical disc releases for newly launched software titles beginning in January 2028. This announcement led to speculation that manufacturing lines would be rapidly dismantled. However, Sony emphasized that its manufacturing facilities will remain active to support catalog titles released prior to the cutoff date, as well as ongoing retail reorders to meet legacy demand.

Unlike competitors such as Microsoft, which relies on third-party Authorized Replicators for disc pressing on Xbox platforms, Sony maintains complete control over its physical supply chain through the DADC division. This vertical integration provides significant leverage over inventory management. The push toward a digital-first ecosystem is primarily driven by financial incentives, as digital distribution expands profit margins. Daniel Ahmad, an analyst at Niko Partners, noted that Sony collects approximately $21 from a $70 game transaction on the digital PlayStation Store, roughly double the return earned through traditional brick-and-mortar retail channels.

The transition has faced criticism from players and industry veterans. Shawn Layden, former chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios, described the decision as "depressing, but solvable," raising concerns about consumer ownership in a service-driven landscape. He questioned the long-term significance of ownership when games are bound entirely to digital storefronts rather than tangible discs, warning that a focus on immediate margin gains could erode brand equity.

For now, Sony's clarification indicates that physical media will not vanish immediately, although the long-term future of physical discs beyond 2028 remains uncertain.
