SEGA surprised fans by confirming an animated series based on the classic 1989 beat 'em up Golden Axe, set to premiere exclusively on Paramount+ this September.
The show, co-created by Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler—known for adult animation hits like Star Trek: Lower Decks and Solar Opposites—promises a distinct plot with solid visuals. The synopsis follows legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to save Yuria from the resurrected Death Adder. Their mission is complicated by Hampton Squib, an underprepared adventurer whose dream of heroism outstrips his skills.
This announcement marks another step in SEGA's strategy to revive its classic intellectual properties following the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. While the upcoming game adaptation has yet to generate significant excitement, this animated project appears to offer a more promising entry point for new audiences.
The series is scheduled to debut on Paramount+ on September 16th. Fans can expect plenty of meta and self-deprecating humor typical of the creators involved, blending nostalgia with modern storytelling techniques.
