LG Display unveils FLiPP tech promising 60% brighter OLED panels
LG Display has unveiled a new manufacturing process called FLiPP (FMM-Less innovative Pixel Patterning) at IMID 2026, promising to boost WOLED panel brightness by up to 60% while improving efficiency and lifespan.
The current standard for OLED production relies on a fine metal mask (FMM), which acts as a stencil for depositing RGB subpixels. While reliable, this method requires a new, expensive mask for every change in panel size or resolution and suffers from physical sagging that can cause alignment defects.
FLiPP eliminates the need for these stencils by using photolithography to precisely coat pixels and erase unnecessary areas during patterning. This approach increases the aperture ratio—the space occupied by subpixels—by approximately 55%, directly translating to higher brightness and better efficiency without the cost or physical constraints of metal masks.
LG Display plans to use IT applications like monitors and tablets as the primary testbed for this technology, with PC implementations expected to arrive first. If applied to current Tandem WOLED panels found in models like the AOC Agon Pro AGP277QKDC, this innovation could push SDR light output to roughly 650 nits, significantly narrowing the gap between OLED and Mini LED displays.
