Salt and Soil: historical strategy about frontier life hits Steam Early Access on November 10
Solo development studio DelosX has announced that the Early Access for its historical turn-based strategy game Salt and Soil: A Frontier Family Sim will launch on Steam on November 10 (KST). The game is coming to PC and will feature support for 10 languages, including Korean.
Salt and Soil depicts the journey of a family building and managing a farm in the United States from 1607 to 1900. The gameplay operates on a turn-based system where one turn represents one year, and players make pivotal decisions during annual family councils. Historical milestones—such as crop failures, wars, the Gold Rush, and the expansion of railroads—will directly impact the family's survival and management choices.
The developer, Roman, has placed a heavy emphasis on historical accuracy, utilizing research databases and feedback from historians and archaeologists. For instance, the settlement details of early Jamestown were adjusted based on findings from Jamestown Rediscovery. Additionally, the game's railroad network, spanning from 1830 to 1900, was implemented using historical data from economic historian Jeremy Atack of Vanderbilt University.
The project has also received validation from subject matter experts. Dr. Joe Hall-Patton, a researcher of American Western history and creator of the YouTube channel 'The Cynical Historian,' played through two scenarios and praised the meaningful depth of the annual historical events. During playtests conducted in August and September, 68% of the 1,000 participants identified the historical setting and frontier atmosphere as the game's standout elements.
Prior to its Early Access debut, Salt and Soil is scheduled to participate in Steam Next Fest from October 19 to 26. The full release of the game is targeted for the first half of 2027.
