RTX 3060 Reclaims Top Spot in Steam Hardware Survey

The latest October 2026 Steam hardware survey shows that the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 has reclaimed its title as the most popular graphics card among Steam users. This follows a month where the older Ampere-based GPU was displaced by the much newer RTX 5070. However, a closer look at the data suggests this comeback might be driven more by changes in the survey's participant pool than by actual market sales.

In October, the GeForce RTX 3060 reached a 3.78% market share, a 0.12 percentage point increase from the previous month. This allowed it to reclaim the lead from the RTX 5070, which saw its share plummet from 6.15% in September to 3.78%. Although both models show the same rounded percentage, Valve's ranking places the RTX 3060 at the top.

The Impact of Regional Demographics

These significant fluctuations are often more indicative of survey demographics than actual hardware sales. The September surge for the RTX 5070 coincided with a notable spike in Chinese-language Steam users. In October, the share of users with Simplified Chinese set as their language dropped by 9.41 percentage points to 21.98%, while English-speaking participants rose to 39.04%. This shift in the participant base is likely the primary reason for the RTX 3060's sudden resurgence.

RAM and VRAM Trends

The shifts extended to system memory configurations as well. After 32 GB of RAM briefly took the lead in September, 16 GB reclaimed the top position in October with a 41.42% share. Meanwhile, the share of 32 GB configurations fell by 5.16 percentage points to 37.06%.

Regarding video memory (VRAM), the distribution stands as follows:

Despite the increasing memory demands of modern gaming, GPUs with relatively limited VRAM (8 GB) continue to maintain a significant presence, narrowly leading over 16 GB configurations.
