007 First Light Review — Metacritic 88: The Best Bond Game Since GoldenEye
The Origin Story That Works
007 First Light follows James Bond (Patrick Gibson) before he earned his double-0. IO Interactive strips away the gadgets, the gun-barrel sequence and the legend, leaving a man with extraordinary instincts navigating real moral weight. It is a bold, confident reimagination.
License to Kill System
The game's signature mechanic tracks Bond's progress toward the License to Kill across missions. Tokyo is the central semi-open location with multiple approach routes. Stealth is rewarded but never mandatory — combat choices affect difficulty, rating, and story branches.
Technical Quality
60 fps Performance mode on PS5 at 1440p upscaled to 4K. Facial animation rivals cinematic cutscenes. Harry Gregson-Williams' score weaves classic Bond motifs into a contemporary thriller tone.
Critical Reception
88 Metacritic (PS5, 47 reviews), 87 PC (24 reviews), 89 OpenCritic. 96% positive. Perfect scores from ComicBook, VGC, and Vice. The critical consensus is the strongest for a Bond game since GoldenEye (1997).
Verdict
007 First Light is a serious action-adventure that earns its license. IO Interactive proves once again they can turn cultural icons into compelling interactive protagonists.
