8340 mAh Battery and Camera Trade-offs: Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G Review
The Redmi Note series has traditionally been known for its balanced performance-to-price ratio. However, the 2026 model from Xiaomi takes a different path. Instead of a versatile mid-range all-rounder, the Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G has evolved into a rugged outdoor companion, boasting a massive 8,340 mAh battery, IP69K certification, and enhanced durability. But this shift comes with significant sacrifices in camera capabilities and raw performance.
Focus on Endurance and Durability
The standout feature of this device is its exceptional battery life. Utilizing a silicon-carbon anode, the 8,340 mAh battery allows the phone to last an impressive 29 hours in Wi-Fi web browsing tests. This makes it a highly reliable choice for long trips or outdoor adventures where charging isn't an option.
The build quality is designed for toughness. While the extensive use of plastic prevents it from feeling like a premium device, the structural integrity is impressive. It carries an IP68/IP69K rating, and TÜV SÜD testing confirmed water resistance up to 2 meters for 72 hours. Additionally, SGS certification ensures the device can withstand drops from up to 3 meters onto granite. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and features a bright 6.83-inch AMOLED panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate, which stands out as one of the device's strongest assets.
Performance and Camera Downgrades
The pursuit of durability and battery capacity has led to notable compromises. The primary camera has undergone a significant downgrade: the large 200 MP sensor found in the previous Redmi Note 15 Pro has been replaced by a much smaller ISOCELL JN sensor (likely the JN1). This results in poorer low-light performance and autofocus struggles in dark environments. Without a dedicated telephoto lens, digital zooming is further hampered by the small sensor size, leading to low-quality images.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 chipset, paired with 6 GB of "LPDDR4x" RAM, falls short of expectations. In benchmarks, it actually performs worse than its predecessor, the Redmi Note 15 Pro, and lags significantly behind competitors like the Samsung Galaxy A57 or Poco X8 Pro, which can offer nearly double the graphics performance for a similar or lower price.
Connectivity also sees some cost-cutting measures, such as the reliance on the older Wi-Fi 5 standard rather than the newer Wi-Fi 7, limiting peak wireless data speeds.
Verdict and Availability
The Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G is a highly specialized device. It is an excellent choice for users who prioritize extreme battery life and ruggedness, but it is likely to disappoint mobile photographers and gamers. In Europe, the device is available in two storage configurations (6/256 GB and 8/512 GB) with an MSRP starting around €480, though street prices can be found near €350.
