PlayStation Portal 2.0? New Filings Hint At An OLED Screen Upgrade
While the PlayStation brand faces ongoing discussions regarding the potential shift to a digital-only model for the PlayStation 6, Sony might be preparing something else for its handheld enthusiasts. Recent filings submitted to the Wi-Fi Alliance suggest that the PlayStation Portal could soon see a successor or a significant hardware refresh.
The Wi-Fi Alliance Findings
As reported by The Verge, two new filings (WFA141399 and WFA141398) have surfaced in the Wi-Fi Alliance database. While these documents do not explicitly name the product or list detailed technical specifications, they do include new model numbers: CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2105. These follow a naming convention similar to the current PlayStation Portal (CFI-Y1001), strongly hinting at a new iteration of the device.

The most anticipated upgrade for a potential PlayStation Portal refresh is an OLED display. The current model relies on an IPS LCD panel, which puts it at a disadvantage compared to existing competitors like the Steam Deck OLED or the Nintendo Switch OLED. An OLED upgrade would address this primary hardware limitation and bring the device up to modern standards.
Two Possible Paths
However, the nature of these filings leaves room for speculation. Given the persistent rumors regarding a dedicated handheld console from Sony, these new models might not just be a refresh of the existing streaming accessory. It is possible that one model represents a streaming-focused handheld, while the other could be the rumored PlayStation 6 handheld itself.
For now, these filings remain unconfirmed as official product announcements, but they represent a significant step in the regulatory process, suggesting that Sony is actively working on its next phase of portable gaming hardware.
