PGL CS2 Major Astana 2026 group stage recap — who made the playoffs

The PGL CS2 Major Astana 2026 group stage is over. Twenty-four teams competed for 16 playoff spots, and the results were exactly as chaotic as the bracket suggested — with a few surprises that will shape the playoff narrative.

Group A: The MongolZ are untouchable

The MongolZ completed their group 3–0 without dropping a map. The highlight was a 2–0 dismantling of FaZe Clan (Dust2 16:8, Inferno 16:11) — a result that definitively answered questions about whether their recent form would hold against a fully prepared top-five opponent. It did. Other group A qualifiers: FaZe Clan (2–1), MOUZ (2–1), Team Spirit (2–1). Eliminated: Heroic and Cloud9.

Group B: NAVI survive an early scare

NAVI dropped an unexpected 0–2 to ENCE in their opening match and faced genuine elimination pressure. They recovered emphatically through the next three matches and finished 3–1. s1mple posted a 1.31 HLTV 2.0 average rating — the highest in the group stage across all groups. Group B qualifiers: NAVI, ENCE, Eternal Fire, Complexity. Eliminated: the two weakest seeds.

Group C: Team Vitality dominant

Team Vitality and ZywOo were clinical: 3–0 in the group, 19 maps played without a single map loss. The most emphatic performance was a 16–2 on Nuke against the weakest seeded team, but the win over the 5th-seeded opponent (13–9 on Inferno) demonstrated that the dominant form is replicable against real opposition.

Group D: G2 Esports show character

G2's opening match loss to HEET — a significant upset — created a genuine do-or-die narrative for the French-led roster. They won their next three matches convincingly. NiKo's 30+ kill performance in the deciding match against Imperial Esports was the individual highlight of the entire group stage. G2 finish 3–1.

Playoff schedule

Quarterfinals begin May 15. Day-one headline matches:

  • The MongolZ vs G2 Esports — 14:00 MSK
  • NAVI vs Team Vitality — 18:00 MSK

The Grand Final is scheduled for May 18. Prize pool: $1,250,000.
