PengPong Review: A Physics-Based Bullet Hell Roguelike

PengPong (Пэнг Понг), a physics-based bullet-hell rogue-lite from SandyFloor, is now available on Steam, published by Gamirror Games. The title blends pinball-style reflection mechanics with deep build customization, challenging players to intercept incoming weapons and objects using a hockey stick rather than relying on automatic attacks. Developed by the Korean indie studio, the game has already garnered significant attention for its unique combat loop and iterative development process.

A Unique Combat Loop

Unlike traditional survival games that rely on auto-attacks, PengPong places manual control at the center of combat. Players must read enemy trajectories, aim precisely, and time their strikes to bounce weapons back at foes. The core loop involves judging angles, positioning, and timing to keep attacks continuous without interruption. This emphasis on player agency over automated systems creates a distinct feel compared to other rogue-lite titles.

Pinball Mechanics Meets Build Depth

The game fuses pinball physics with bullet-hell construction. A wide array of weapons and objects, including hockey sticks, revolvers, and knives, are available for use. Performance is not static; it evolves based on the combination of items and upgrades acquired during a run. Players can enhance attributes such as attack power, reflection performance, range, fire rate, and status effects to create unique combat styles.

Progression and Testing

The official release features a 30-layer run composed of combat, rewards, shops, elites, and bosses. SandyFloor applied an iterative testing methodology originally used in mobile development to the PC version. Through three stages of focus group testing, the team refined the lobby, progression structure, reward design, shop options, boss patterns, and UI visibility based on global player feedback received after the beta.

Awards and Reception

PengPong has achieved notable recognition prior to its full launch. It won "Best Game" and "Audience Vote" at G-STAR 2025 and placed second in the Google Play-sponsored "Indie Fest" at BIC 2026. The Steam wishlist surpassed 23,000 entries before release, representing a five-fold increase over the studio's previous title.

Release Details

The game is available on Steam for PC. The standard price is set at 1,588 JPY (tax included). To celebrate the launch, a limited-time sale offering 10% off is active until September 4, 2026. A free demo version remains accessible on the Steam store page. Future updates are planned to include balance adjustments and new content based on community feedback.
