Once Human Launches Ocean Expansion 'Isles of Abyss'
NetEase Games has launched the ocean expansion Isles of Abyss for Once Human. Available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, the update introduces ship building, ocean survival mechanics, and large-scale cooperative raids.
The expansion is set in an oceanic zone where the sea itself is an ancient entity known as The Sunken Lord. Players must master navigation to traverse four hazardous regions, each featuring distinct environmental anomalies: Mist of Deceit, which obscures vision; Black Tide, which destabilizes sanity; Time Rain, which corrodes equipment while accelerating crop growth; and Skyfire, which erupts like a volcano.
Each region contains a biomechanical lighthouse called the Tower of Calamity. Destroying these towers via ships or firearms unlocks higher crafting tiers and allows travel to subsequent regions. During the second phase of content, these structures mutate into the more dangerous Abyssal Lighthouse.
Ship customization is a major addition, allowing players to advance an ocean tech tree to upgrade propulsion or equip vessels with cannons and harpoons. Ships can also function as mobile survival bases, equipped with automatic fishing nets, smelters, generators, and workbenches. Additionally, players can encounter and board five types of ghost ships to claim rare blueprints and mods.
The endgame features a two-phase raid system centered on The Sunken Lord, operating on a 21-day server cycle. Players must cooperate to conquer five regions and the Tower of Calamity to trigger Phase 2, where the boss Calamity Owl appears. Once all anomalies are purified, players can awaken the final boss for a 4-player raid to attack its heart.
Furthermore, Once Human has been selected as the first participating game in the Green Game Jam 2027. As part of this environmental initiative, the game is hosting Mr. Wish's Drift Bottle, a community campaign where players share stories of environmental recovery to earn in-game rewards.
