NVIDIA Unveils DLSS Preset C: Up to 35% Boost in Frame Generation
NVIDIA has introduced a new algorithm for its DLSS Frame Generation technology, dubbed Preset C. This new preset, referred to as Performance Mode, aims to make frame generation more efficient by optimizing optical flow AI calculations. According to the manufacturer, this optimization reduces the computational cost of generating frames, which is vital for maintaining high frame rates in demanding titles.
Technical Breakdown
The DLSS Frame Generation (FG) and Multi-Frame Generation (MFG) processes rely on two distinct AI models. The first uses game data, such as motion vectors and depth, to understand object movement between two natively rendered frames. The second calculates optical flow for elements like UI or ray-traced effects. Preset C replaces the latter with a faster, lighter algorithm. This reduces the performance cost of FG and MFG by 10% in 2x mode, 23.8% in 4x mode, and 36.4% in 6x mode. Based on NVIDIA's testing on an RTX 5060 running Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p, this can result in up to 35% higher performance on RTX 50 series GPUs.

Compatibility and Availability
Official support for Preset C is currently limited to RTX 50 and RTX 40 series GPUs, as well as RTX Spark laptops. NVIDIA has not confirmed whether the same performance scaling applies to the older 40-series hardware. While the company claims the impact on image quality is minimal, the use of a lighter algorithm inherently involves some trade-offs in visual fidelity.
However, the modding community has already bypassed these restrictions. Developer dashdogy has released Universal MFG Unlocker 1.5.0, which enables Preset C on RTX 30 series GPUs, providing unofficial support for the new algorithm on older hardware.
How to Enable Preset C
To use this feature in supported games, users must use the NVIDIA App (beta). Under the Custom DLSS Override section in the Graphics settings, Preset C can be selected from the Frame Generation dropdown menu. Users must first opt-in to experimental features within the app's settings to access the beta update.
