NVIDIA confirms no DLSS 5 override in App, modders build tool
NVIDIA has confirmed that the NVIDIA App will not include a global override to force-enable DLSS 5 Neural Rendering in games that do not officially support the feature. Instead, availability will depend entirely on individual developers integrating the technology. However, the modding community has already developed a workaround, releasing a tool that can inject the leaked runtime into a wide range of PC games and emulators.
Yesterday, NVIDIA stated that there will be no switch inside the NVIDIA App to enable Neural Rendering on a per-game basis. This means that if a game does not natively implement DLSS 5, users cannot simply toggle it on through the company’s official software. The decision places the responsibility for adoption squarely on game developers, limiting the immediate reach of the new upscaling and frame generation technology to titles that have explicitly opted in.
Despite this official restriction, the modding community has already provided a functional alternative. A tool called DLSS 5 Swapper, version 2.1.1, was released on September 2. This utility allows users to install the leaked Neural Rendering runtime into supported PC games and emulators. The application scans existing game libraries and handles the necessary file modifications automatically, effectively bypassing the lack of an official override.
The latest update to DLSS 5 Swapper introduces a complete DLSS5-Feeder path for 64-bit games that do not already include the nvngx_dlss.dll file. Users can select between native DLSS and the DLSS5-Feeder from the game profile. The Feeder route currently targets DirectX 11, DirectX 12, Vulkan, and OpenGL. This implementation requires motion-vector information before Neural Rendering can process the image. The tool uses LumeniteFX Kernel 2.0 motion vectors where available, while VORT is included as an offline fallback. For 32-bit games, the application uses a bundled 64-bit helper because NVIDIA’s NGX runtime is 64-bit. DirectX 9 games can also be routed through dgVoodoo2 before reaching the Feeder.
Version 2.1.1 also adds profiles for a wide array of emulators, including DuckStation, PCSX2, Dolphin, PPSSPP, Xenia, Cemu, RPCS3, Ryujinx, shadPS4, Vita3K, and RetroArch. The application exposes Direct3D, Vulkan, and OpenGL renderer options where supported. This makes the same Neural Rendering setup used for PC games accessible to emulated games without requiring native DLSS integration from the emulator developers.
The project claims compatibility with GeForce RTX 20, RTX 30, RTX 40, and RTX 50 series GPUs through a patched nvngx_dlssnr.dll. It is important to note that this is not official NVIDIA hardware support. The company is unlikely to officially support all these architectures for DLSS 5 Neural Rendering in the near future, as the technology is primarily targeted at newer hardware generations.
The existence of DLSS 5 Swapper highlights a common dynamic in the PC gaming ecosystem: when official software limitations restrict user control, the modding community often steps in to provide the desired functionality. In this case, the tool offers more features and options than NVIDIA has provided through its official channels, allowing users to experiment with DLSS 5 in a broader range of applications than officially supported.
