Neo Geo AES+ delayed to late 2027 due to memory shortage

Unlike most modern retro console re-releases that rely on software emulation, the Neo Geo AES+ is designed as a 1:1 physical hardware replica. Plaion states that the device uses dedicated ASIC chips and contemporary clones of the original processors, including the Motorola 68000 and Zilog Z80A. This approach aims to ensure that the system performs identically to the original Neo Geo AES (Advanced Entertainment System) without the overhead or potential inaccuracies of emulation.

The project carries significant technical credibility, as the development team includes Jotego, a long-time developer of the "MiSTER" FPGA core. To maintain direct compatibility with original media, the new console utilizes a 5 V power delivery system, allowing it to run authentic Neo Geo cartridges. Plaion expects every game cartridge from the original home console to function on the AES+, and third-party adapters for arcade cartridges are also available.

The delay to late 2027 is primarily linked to the current RAM shortage, a crisis exacerbated by the surge in AI data center demand. While the Neo Geo architecture is not dependent on modern high-bandwidth memory, the global supply chain constraints for memory components have impacted production schedules. Plaion also cited higher-than-expected demand as a contributing factor to the decision to push back the launch date.

The original Neo Geo system, produced from 1990 to 2004, was notable for using identical hardware in both arcade cabinets and home consoles. It featured a complex configuration of seven processors and co-processors, along with a GPU capable of displaying 3,840 simultaneous colors across 380 sprites. The system's expandable storage allowed for late-generation cartridges with up to 89.5 MB of data, supporting a wide variety of 2D games.

Plaion is re-releasing ten iconic titles in cartridge form for the AES+, including Metal Slug, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Pulstar, and King of Fighters 2002. The console will be available in three configurations:

• Base Model: Console and one joystick for $249.99 (or €199.99).
• Anniversary Edition: White finish, Metal Slug cartridge, wireless joystick, and memory card for $349.99 (or €299.99).
• Ultimate Edition: All ten re-released games, two joysticks (wired and wireless), and a gamepad for $999.99 (or €899.99).

Individual game cartridges are priced at $90 each. The Neo Geo AES+ represents a niche but dedicated offering for retro enthusiasts who prioritize hardware authenticity over the convenience of emulation, though the delay highlights the broader impact of the memory shortage on the hardware industry.
