Moonlighter dev delays Steam playtest for its ReVamp over AI clone concerns
Digital Sun, the indie studio behind Moonlighter and Cataclismo, has decided to delay the planned Steam playtest for its upcoming title, ReVamp. The developers cited concerns regarding games being reverse-engineered and cloned by generative AI tools before the original titles even hit the market.
The studio had intended to launch a playtest for its vampiric "Tower Defensevania," ReVamp, late this month. However, in a recent Steam blog post, the developers explained that sharing a build with tens of thousands of players months before launch poses too much risk of AI-generated copycats replicating the gameplay and presentation.
As a result, Digital Sun is shifting to a more controlled testing environment. The first waves of access will be granted via Discord starting October 29. While those who missed the initial window can still participate in community discussions, the full public playtest on Steam is now expected around January.
ReVamp is currently scheduled for a full release on March 25, 2027. This move reflects a growing trend in the industry; for instance, Alliance Arts recently cancelled their Steam Next Fest demo for Drunken Goddess Reflux to prevent similar AI-driven imitation of their game's mechanics.
