Microsoft to remove Publisher from Microsoft 365 in October 2026
Microsoft has officially confirmed that the Publisher application will no longer be included in the Microsoft 365 subscription starting October 1, 2026. The company attributes this decision to a consistent decline in user numbers and low usage frequency.
Reason for removal: Low popularity
In the notification sent to subscribers, Microsoft states that it regularly analyzes product usage. This analysis revealed that Publisher is gradually losing popularity among users and is being used less frequently over time.
Microsoft's argumentation: Ecosystem evolution
Instead of framing the removal as a downgrade to the subscription, the company positions it as part of the continuous evolution of Microsoft 365. According to the manufacturer, many tasks previously performed in Publisher can now be handled by other ecosystem applications:
- Word and PowerPoint will take over creating templates, labels, envelopes, calendars, and cards.
- Microsoft Designer, an AI-focused design tool comparable to Canva, will be available for design work.
Microsoft also argues that discontinuing less-used applications will free up resources to improve key products such as Microsoft 365 Copilot and the new Outlook application.
Situation for LTSC owners
Owners of perpetual Office LTSC 2021 licenses get only a delay. Support for this version, including Publisher, will officially end on October 13, 2026. Using the program after this date is technically possible, but no further security patches will be provided.
What users should do
The application can be used as usual until October 1, 2026. However, Microsoft strongly recommends saving files in supported formats such as PDF or Word. Without conversion, there is a risk that after access to Publisher files via the Microsoft 365 subscription is discontinued, they will not be able to open or edit them.
