Following large-scale dissatisfaction with the overall Windows experience, Microsoft issued a statement in March 2026 explaining its commitment to delivering "smoother navigation and more reliable performance for everyday tasks." Now, over four months later, Pavan Davaluri has provided an update on the progress of this initiative in a new X post.

What Has Changed?

In his latest update, Davaluri claims that Microsoft has implemented "substantial improvements in memory efficiency and latency." Key areas of focus include:

  • Reduced Memory Overhead: Lowering the memory footprint across apps and system components.

  • WinUI 3 Tuning: Built-in apps are now designed to use less memory by default through interface optimizations.

  • Chromium and WebView2 Efficiencies: Driving efficiencies in web content rendering within the operating system.

A major focus is on devices with limited RAM. Microsoft explicitly stated it will be working on "memory optimization for 8 GB and above," aiming to reduce the OS's memory footprint to deliver a fast and responsive experience on everyday PCs.

User Sentiment Remains Skeptical

Despite these efforts, user sentiment remains cautious. In a recent TechPowerUp reader poll of 24,100 participants, only 6% said Windows was "noticeably improved," while 12% noted "minor improvements." Perhaps more damning, 36% of respondents said that Windows 11 was "actually getting worse" following the announcement.

Users note that memory inefficiency isn't limited to Microsoft, but for owners of budget machines with 8 GB of RAM, any steps toward optimization are crucial. While Microsoft previously recommended a 32 GB configuration as the "no worries" setup for gaming, the current landscape of component scarcity and rising prices has shifted focus back to improving performance on lower-spec hardware.
