Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to 60,000 workers
Microsoft is expanding its workforce reduction efforts, offering voluntary buyouts to approximately 60,000 employees. This figure represents roughly 25% of the company's total headcount.
According to a report from Business Insider, the offer is available to staff in the US, Canada, India, and the UK, though not every team within the organization is eligible. It remains unclear whether the Xbox division will be directly affected by this specific move, despite recent reports suggesting that the division's broader restructuring efforts are still ongoing.
In a memo to staff, Chief People Officer Amy Coleman stated that the Voluntary Exit Offer is part of the company's evolving approach to organizational change. She noted that the initiative aims to provide employees with greater flexibility and more ways to shape their next professional chapter, building upon a Voluntary Retirement Program conducted earlier this year.
Data from the previous voluntary retirement program indicates that 9,000 employees were offered packages, with approximately one-third of them choosing to accept. These large-scale workforce adjustments at Microsoft come as the tech giant continues to allocate massive capital toward AI data center infrastructure.
