Micron commits $10 billion to US research labs for post-DRAM AI tech
Micron Technology has announced a $10 billion commitment to establish Micron Research Labs, a new long-horizon research hub headquartered in Boise, Idaho.
The investment is entirely separate from Micron's broader $250 billion pledge for domestic manufacturing and R&D. While the existing fabs in Idaho handle high-volume commercial production of standard DRAM and NAND memory, the new Research Labs will focus on breakthrough technologies beyond current roadmaps. The primary targets include post-DRAM architectures, advanced packaging solutions, and next-generation compute systems specifically engineered for future AI workloads.
Construction on the flagship Boise facility is set to break ground in 2027, creating a campus capable of hosting hundreds of researchers. The initiative aims to bring together top talent from academia, government agencies, startups, and industry partners to drive innovation upstream of every product Micron builds.

This strategic move signals Micron's long-term confidence in the AI market, following its decision to disband the consumer-facing Crucial division to focus on more lucrative data center segments. Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron's CEO, emphasized that America's future in AI will be built on American-made memory.
