Massive Effect: Documentary to chronicle BioWare's history and final days
Following the recent decision by EA to shut down BioWare, a documentary has been announced that aims to chronicle the legendary RPG studio's history. Titled 'Massive Effect: The BioWare Story', the film is expected to cover the studio's trajectory from its founding in 1995 through to its final days and beyond.
The announcement comes at a somber time for the industry. The closure of BioWare has already resulted in significant fallout, including the cancellation of Mass Effect 5—a project that had previously generated interest through leaked footage and commentary from former developers. While the studio's legacy remains intact through its massive catalog of RPGs, the news of a documentary feels bittersweet given the context of the studio's dissolution.
According to reports from Deadline, the documentary is being produced for Canada's Super Channel and will be helmed by Shane Fennessey and Adam Scorgie. Interestingly, filming reportedly began two years ago, suggesting the project was conceived as a celebratory retrospective long before the studio's recent shutdown became a reality.
A star-studded lineup of RPG legends
The film promises to feature a comprehensive look at the people who shaped the studio's identity. Expected participants include BioWare founders Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip. They will be joined by a long list of veteran developers and key figures, such as Mark Darrah, David Gaider, Drew Karpyshyn, Aaryn Flynn, Mac Walters, Trent Oster, James Ohlen, and Caroline Livingstone.
The documentary is also expected to feature appearances from prominent industry figures and voice talent, including Jennifer Hale, Casey Hudson, and Geoff Keighley.
Honoring the legacy of storytelling
In a statement regarding the production, co-founders Muzyka and Zeschuk expressed their support for the project, emphasizing that the studio's essence resided in its people and fans rather than just a corporate entity.
- "BioWare was never just about the logo or the building. It was about the stories brought to life by the amazing people on our dev teams, and the fans who defended those worlds..."
- "We’re proud this film honors those who made it all possible. The best stories never really end."
While the documentary is slated for a 2027 release, it appears to be more than just a chronicle of a studio's end. It aims to serve as a recognition of BioWare's profound influence on the RPG genre, even if the timing of its release feels like a posthumous tribute to a once-titan of the industry.
