Lenovo continues to experiment with flexible displays, but this time the focus has shifted from vertical scrolling to horizontal expansion. According to leaks from Windows Latest, the concept laptop codenamed Project Swan (within the ThinkBook family) will feature a screen that unfolds sideways rather than downwards.
How it works and why it matters
Unlike previous commercial Lenovo solutions that opened vertically (like the ThinkPad Rollable XD), Project Swan uses dual motors to push out side rails. This transforms a standard laptop into a portable ultrawide monitor with a 21:9 aspect ratio.
Renders published by the source show a two-tone rear chassis with visible cutouts for the mechanics and a narrow central hinge that does not interfere with screen movement. The concept is clearly aimed at corporate users: developers, data analysts, and executives who need to work with multiple windows simultaneously without connecting external monitors.
The device is equipped with a pair of USB-C ports on the left side for charging and peripheral connectivity. The design maintains the strict "corporate" ThinkBook style but adds complex internal mechanics.
Technical challenges and cost
Bringing such technology to mass production remains a serious task. A two-sided motorized system increases weight, dimensions, and the number of mechanical failure points. The flexible OLED panel must withstand multiple unfolding cycles without creasing, and movement tracks must be protected from dust.
Cost will also be high: similar commercial systems with flexible screens often start at over three thousand dollars. Lenovo may consider offering an extended warranty for such devices given their mechanical complexity, although the standard warranty is currently one year (as with the ThinkPad Rollable XD).
