Infineon expands PSOC Control C3: motor control and post-quantum security
Infineon has expanded its PSOC Control C3 family with the introduction of the PSC3M6 and PSC3P6 models. These new microcontrollers combine an ARM Cortex-M33 core running at up to 180 MHz with advanced control functions and security mechanisms designed to enable the transition to post-quantum cryptography for firmware protection.
Motor Control and Power Conversion
The new PSOC Control C3 microcontrollers are engineered for demanding real-time control applications, such as industrial drives, robotics, and drones. The PSC3M6 variant is specifically optimized for motor control, capable of driving up to four brushless DC (BLDC) motors from a single chip. The controllers support both sensor-based and sensorless control methods, the latter of which determines rotor position through electrical characteristics without requiring additional position sensors.
In contrast, the PSC3P6 models focus on power conversion and digital power supply regulation. By integrating dedicated timers, PWM functions, and analog measurement circuits, these controllers allow engineers to centralize control tasks, reducing the overall component count and complexity of the system.
Post-Quantum Security Readiness
A significant aspect of this announcement is the focus on long-term security for industrial devices that remain in operation for decades. Infineon has designed these controllers to meet CNSA 2.0 requirements, specifically supporting SHA-512 and LMS (Leighton-Micali Signatures). This hash-based digital signature method is considered resistant to attacks from future quantum computers, facilitating secure boot and authenticated firmware updates.
It is important to clarify that the support for LMS and SHA-512 is specifically intended for firmware and software update verification, rather than providing a full suite of all possible post-quantum algorithms. Additionally, while Infineon states that the architecture enables PSA Level 3 compliance, this refers to meeting the requirements for the standard rather than a blanket certification for all product variants.
Target Markets and Availability
The product line targets sectors where longevity and security are critical, including renewable energy systems, data centers, telecommunications, and smart appliances. This focus aligns with increasing regulatory demands, such as the European Cyber Resilience Act, which mandates appropriate security levels for connected products.
The PSC3M6 and PSC3P6 models are already available in various package options with up to 100 pins. While specific pricing has not been disclosed by Infineon, the controllers are positioned to simplify hardware design in complex multi-motor or power management systems.
