How Remedies Shape Progression in Hela: Of Mice & Magic

The developers at Windup have provided a closer look at a core pillar of Hela: Of Mice & Magic: the Brewing & Remedies system. Rather than a static menu, this mechanic serves as the primary driver for exploration and environmental interaction.

An Interactive Brewing Experience

In Hela: Of Mice & Magic, crafting is far from a menu-driven chore. Each recipe is designed as an interactive process requiring a specific sequence of manual actions and ingredient combinations. This approach ensures that players are actively engaged with the workshop mechanics, making experimentation and curiosity just as vital as the collection of resources themselves.

Players take on the roles of tiny mouse familiars assisting a kind-hearted witch. As they traverse landscapes inspired by Northern Sweden—ranging from lush meadows to wetlands—they gather native plants and magical ingredients. These findings are brought back to the witch's cottage to fuel the brewing process.

Remedies: Expanding the World

The most significant outcome of this system is the creation of Remedies. These magical tools are designed to drive progression by changing how players interact with the world. Instead of simply increasing combat stats, Remedies focus on environmental navigation and puzzle-solving. They allow players to:

  • access previously unreachable paths;
  • approach complex puzzles from entirely new angles;
  • overcome environmental obstacles that once seemed impossible.

This creates a gameplay loop where exploration provides the ingredients, and the resulting Remedies unlock new areas, which in turn leads to more ingredients, driving the player deeper into the world.

Cooperative Synergy and Solo Play

The Remedies system is built to shine in cooperative play. While the game is fully playable solo, playing with friends—via local split-screen or online co-op for up to four players—encourages creative experimentation. Players can combine different tools and abilities to find unexpected solutions to environmental challenges.

For solo adventurers, the Shade System provides a way to overcome complexity by creating magical copies of oneself to assist with puzzles and world interactions.

Hela: Of Mice & Magic is set to launch on December 1, 2026, arriving on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Game Pass on day one.
