Is Hell is Us Worth Playing on Game Pass? A Review of Its Marker-Free Journey
Hell is Us joined Xbox Game Pass on July 23 for cloud, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. That makes this a useful moment to revisit one of 2025’s most independent-minded adventures and identify who will appreciate its rejection of conventional navigation.
Human War and a Supernatural Disaster
Protagonist Remi returns to isolated Hadea during a civil war. At the same time, Hollow Walkers appear, creatures that conventional firearms cannot stop. His personal search for answers becomes a broader investigation of violence, memory, and conflicts that repeat across generations.
Hell is Us does not use war as neutral scenery. Ruined settlements, survivor testimony, and evidence of atrocities create a consistently uncomfortable picture. Its writing is not always subtle, yet the world retains weight when the narrative moves toward supernatural mysteries.
Exploration Without Maps or Markers
The defining choice is the absence of normal waypoints, an interactive local map, and a detailed quest log. Characters describe roads, buildings, and landmarks in words. Players must remember those directions, read documents, and compare the landscape with what they have learned.
The same system frustrates when a small room or object must be found again inside a wide area. The game rewards close observation but offers little help reconstructing a completed route. Keeping notes beside the screen is practical advice rather than a joke.
Puzzles Built From Context
Codes, symbols, and mechanisms are rarely solved by an item sitting beside them. An answer may depend on a document in another building, local history, or a detail from a conversation. The best puzzles create understanding instead of merely requesting a combination.
Not every solution is equally legible. Reviews identified moments where the reasoning felt remote or relied on difficult-to-read text. Without an internal hint system, one missed symbol can stop progress more effectively than a boss.
Combat Supports the Journey
Remi uses swords, axes, greatswords, and polearms alongside blocks, parries, and abilities. His drone initially distracts enemies and later gains stun and damage modules. Grief, Rage, Ecstasy, and Terror connect weapon properties, abilities, and enemy types.
The system works better as a tense interval between discoveries than as a complete soulslike foundation. Enemies support the atmosphere, but combat situations become repetitive. Critical reviews broadly agreed that fighting is functional and sometimes satisfying while remaining less distinctive than the world and puzzles.
Why It Is Not a Traditional Soulslike
Stamina, healing scarcity, dangerous melee encounters, and readable enemy motions make the comparison understandable. Death, however, is not the center of progression, and the design is not organized around repeatedly recovering lost resources.
The more important difficulty is cognitive. Hell is Us tests attention to wording, spatial memory, and a willingness to search dead ends. A player who parries perfectly but skips dialogue may struggle more than a cautious observer.
Atmosphere and Technical Context
Unreal Engine 5 helps Hadea feel credible and alien: concrete evidence of war sits beside smooth, almost ritual supernatural forms. Sound often matters more than music, using empty space, distant impacts, and subdued voices to preserve tension.
Launch reviews reported isolated performance issues and small, difficult text. The condition of each version depends on subsequent updates, so PC players should check current requirements and drivers. Steam Deck compatibility remains a particular weakness.
Who Should Play It on Game Pass
The subscription removes the main barrier for anyone uncertain about the navigation. Hell is Us deserves a trial from players who enjoy dark adventures, independent conclusions, and worlds that refuse to convert every task into a checklist.
It is neither a flawless action game nor a universal recommendation. Repetitive fighting and losing direction are real risks. Yet its willingness to trust observation makes it memorable. MBG’s score is 8/10: a strong exploratory adventure whose severity is both its identity and limitation.
