Hacker linked to GTA Online revenue leak arrested in the Netherlands
Dutch police have arrested a 24-year-old man in Amsterdam in connection with an investigation into ShinyHunters. The FBI identifies this hacking group as the entity responsible for the data breach that exposed confidential revenue figures for GTA Online earlier this year.
While the Dutch National Police confirmed the arrest on September 28 without naming the suspect, Reuters has identified him as Pepijn van der Stap. He currently serves as the offensive cybersecurity lead at Neo Security in Amsterdam. Although he joined the firm this year, the FBI believes he has been leading ShinyHunters since 2025. The group has denied these claims and criticized the Dutch authorities for incompetence.
The breach occurred in April when ShinyHunters attempted to extort Rockstar Games. Following the studio's refusal to pay, the group published stolen data revealing that GTA Online generates over $1 million in daily revenue. The group is also linked to intrusions at over 100 organizations, including Ticketmaster and the FBI.
This incident follows the August leak of GTA 6 gameplay footage by the CyberLeek group, which led Take-Two to issue subpoenas to Microsoft, Discord, and Twitter/X to track down the perpetrators. Following the arrest, the FBI Cyber Division issued a warning to the remaining members of ShinyHunters, stating that anonymity will not protect them.
