GTA 6 writer says series has never focused much on national politics beyond GTA 4

As the marketing push for the console launch of GTA 6 continues, more details regarding its narrative approach are emerging. In a recent interview with Love Magazine, Rockstar Games senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries discussed how the studio plans to handle satire and the concept of the American dream without getting bogged down in specific real-world politics.

While screenshots of the Ambrosia region show political elements—such as campaign signs for a candidate named Erin Henshaw—Humphries emphasized that the studio is avoiding direct mimicry of specific figures or movements. The goal is to prevent the game's world from feeling outdated too quickly as time passes.

The developer pointed to GTA 4 as a unique outlier in the series, noting that its focus on the War on Terror and the Patriot Act was a direct reflection of the post-9/11 atmosphere in New York. In contrast, GTA 6 will focus on making everything satirical, larger-than-life, and grotesque. Instead of a one-to-one copy of reality, Rockstar is leaning into exaggerated versions of conspiracy theories and the public's bizarre reactions to everyday occurrences.

The conversation also touched upon the evolution of the American dream. If GTA 4 told an immigrant's story as a commentary on the illusion of opportunity, and GTA 5 leaned into cynicism, the new entry may offer a different perspective. Humphries noted that today, the American dream might seem more modest—such as owning a home and paying off loans—but for the average person, it may remain just as out of reach. He described Florida as a "front line" in the battle between astronomical wealth and unbounded ambition.

Thus far, much of what has been shown for GTA 6 feels more like the glitzy action-adventure style of GTA 5 rather than the grit of GTA 4. However, the developer's comments suggest that social and political themes, including the extremes of modern society, will still play a role in this grotesque parody.
