GTA 6 Netflix preview boosts UK console sales

According to Nielsen IQ data cited by The Games Business, PS5 console sales rose by 33% while Xbox console sales increased by 34% in the period following the reveal. The spike in demand has led to stock shortages for premium hardware, with PS5 Pro consoles selling out nationwide. Retailers such as Argos and Smyths Toys now report that only base models remain available on their shelves.

Despite the significant jump in sales ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6's launch in November and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 in October, industry analysts remain cautious about the long-term impact. Ronan Patrick from Newzoo stated that the company expects an uptick in the install base but nothing particularly massive. He noted that in inflation-adjusted terms, the PS5 is 67% more expensive than at launch, while the Xbox is twice as expensive. Patrick added that the closest historical analogy to a hardware shock is the 2020-2021 GPU shortage, which resulted in a reallocation of spend into software rather than a major shift in engagement or revenue.

Other market reports present a mixed picture for the broader UK hardware market. VGC reports that overall UK hardware sales are down 14.4% year-on-year, primarily due to a 32% decline in PS5 sales, while Xbox Series X|S sales have increased by 3.1%. This suggests that the recent spike may be a temporary surge driven by the high-profile title rather than a sustained reversal of the market trend.

The Grand Theft Auto 6 preview itself generated massive viewership across platforms. The extended preview was Netflix's most-viewed title last week, reaching 31.1 million views in four days. On YouTube, the preview received 22 million views in one week. Sensor Tower data further indicates that Netflix's US mobile viewership increased by 35% hour-over-hour during the premiere, highlighting the significant cross-platform attention the game is attracting ahead of its release.
