Gothic 1 Remake 1.0.4: Save Checks After the Patch

Gothic 1 Remake patch 1.0.4 fixes dialogue and quest blockers, XP, equipment, and loot errors, while changing armor balance and several item locations. This is a safe checklist for an existing save, limited to behavior described in the official changelog.

Before Loading the Save

Confirm that the menu reports version 1.0.4, then create a separate manual save. Do not overwrite your only older slot. The patch touches NPC routines, quest states, inventories, and item placement; an independent copy gives you a clean return point if you encounter a problem outside the documented list.

Console players should also verify quicksave because the update fixes cases in which the game incorrectly said saving was unavailable. Quicksave and Quickload should remain active during key remapping. Test both in a safe location before using either ahead of combat or a chapter transition.

Remove and Re-equip Rings and Amulets

The update fixes two connected errors: an amulet or ring bonus could remain after removal, and moving a ring between slots could duplicate its stat increase. Record current values, remove jewelry, close and reopen the inventory, then equip each piece separately. The final total should match item descriptions without an accumulated extra bonus.

Wearable tooltips have returned to the equipment selection view. Check the bow on the hero’s back after equipping spells as well. If ore is assigned to the action bar, the inventory should no longer display its quantity as zero.

Verify XP and Trophies

Finishing a downed NPC with arrows or magic should now award XP, while inconsistencies involving magical finishing blows or the F button have been addressed. Use an ordinary enemy for a controlled check and compare XP before and after; do not test this on a significant story character.

Animal trophies once again appear as loot before the related harvesting skill is learned, and trophy items in chests should not disappear because a lesson is missing. That does not grant automatic harvesting rights in every case: the patch corrects visibility and specific access bugs rather than removing the learning system.

Review Active Quests by Chapter

Chapter 1 fixes cover Snipes’ key for Aaron, Grim’s path to Lost Amulet, and the Gomez interrogation. In Chapter 2, Ring for Fingers persists, Convoy fails when another camp is joined, and Thorus is marked as a teacher from the beginning. Chapter 3 keeps Milten inside his focus area rather than following the hero.

Chapter 4 changes address Escape Plan, Cavalorn’s gland hand-in, and Banned from Old Camp. Chapter 5 fixes Stone’s routine, the Frost Shadow Beast for Bestiary 5, Forged Rivalries, Ore Armor upgrades, and Master Blacksmith recipes. Do not force a completed step to repeat; inspect the journal and speak to the relevant NPC first.

Account for Balance and Loot Movement

Caster robes now provide more physical protection and maximum mana in exchange for reduced elemental protection. Early Shadow and Bandit armor upgrades are cheaper, while later tiers cost more and provide slightly less protection. Guard, Mercenary, and Templar armor upgrades are more expensive, particularly at high tiers, which may alter spending plans in an existing save.

Several weapons, potions, and rewards moved or changed. Exact examples include the Oak Bow moving from Mountain Fortress to Ancient Monastery, a Hedge Bow being added to Mountain Fortress, and the Dexterity Potion returning behind the waterfall near Sunken Tower. Queen Pheromones were removed from the Old Mine secret passage. Sources: Alkimia Interactive; THQ Nordic; official patch 1.0.4 changelog.
