Genesis Magma Racing's Kim Young-chan Named Asian Games Gran Turismo 7 Representative
Genesis Magma Racing driver Kim Young-chan, who secured first place in the Gran Turismo 7 qualifiers, has been selected as the representative for South Korea at the 20th Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. The athlete expressed his surprise upon learning that racing was included in the competition schedule.
The 2000-born driver made his debut in the 2019 Hyundai N Festival Veloster N Cup R.4 before joining Genesis Magma Racing this year. He earned his spot on the national team by topping the qualifiers held at the Sangam Cube Convention Center (CCC) in Seoul.
Kim noted that he was shocked when Gran Turismo 7 was chosen for the Asian Games, especially since few players outside Japan typically compete in it. He acknowledged that sim racing has a high entry barrier due to expensive equipment, which limits the number of new users.
Despite finding the game challenging compared to other sim racers he usually plays, Kim is training 8 to 10 hours daily to match international competitors. He believes his background in actual car racing provides a significant psychological advantage, as the physical actions of steering and braking are nearly identical to controller inputs.
"If we work hard during the remaining period, I think we can definitely aim for a medal," Kim stated, expressing confidence that his real-world experience will help him handle the pressure and tension felt on actual race tracks.
