Five-Time Champion Kim Min-chul: "The Player I'm Most Wary of Is 'Jjapjae'"
Kim Min-chul, widely known as "The Iron Wall," has etched his name into the history books of Google Play ASL Season 22. In a grueling 4-3 final held at the Lotte World Ice Rink in Seoul, he defeated Yoo Young-jin to reclaim his throne. This victory marks a historic milestone, making Kim Min-chul the first player in ASL history to secure five individual championships. His win also extended the Zerg race's dominance to seven consecutive titles.
The victory was a testament to Kim Min-chul's mental fortitude. Currently on a 15-match winning streak in best-of series, the champion explained that his strength in high-stakes matches comes from his ability to compartmentalize setbacks. He noted that losing a set in an offline match does not affect him mentally, allowing him to focus immediately on the next game without being shaken.
The path to the title was not without tension. Kim Min-chul admitted that after winning the fifth set on Aiolos, he felt certain of the championship, only to be reminded of the volatility of professional play when he lost the subsequent set. He also noted that the unique setting of the ice rink served as significant motivation, though it required careful physical condition management to prepare for the finals.
Despite his legendary status, Kim Min-chul remains driven. While he admitted his motivation dipped slightly after winning four consecutive titles, his hunger for competition has returned. Looking ahead to next season, he identified Park "Jjapjae" Sang-hyeon as the player he fears most. Kim Min-chul believes that as long as both players maintain their passion for StarCraft, they will continue to be the ones fighting for future championships.
