Final Fantasy VII Revelation director says he 'did his best' to fight for a full disc release
Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi has addressed fan concerns regarding the lack of a full disc version in the game's physical release. In an interview with Radio Times, he stated that he "did his best" to advocate for physical media, even as the industry trends toward a digital-first future.
Speaking about his personal connection to physical media, Hamaguchi mentioned his childhood habit of collecting games and his desire to have signed copies from industry colleagues. He acknowledged that the topic of physical vs. digital formats has become a "particularly sensitive" issue recently.
While the director attempted to negotiate with both internal teams and first-party partners, the final decision rested with the publishing team. Hamaguchi clarified that his authority is limited to ensuring the game's content is engaging, whereas product SKUs and distribution methods are the responsibility of publishers. Consequently, the game will ship with a "key disc" containing only the opening sequence. Players on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will still need to download a substantial amount of data to play the full game.
The director expressed empathy for fans who follow a "no disc, no purchase" policy, but he believes physical media will persist in some form, even if it eventually evolves into little more than a printed code inside a box.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on April 8, 2027. Additionally, it was noted that while obtaining the Platinum trophy in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was intentionally difficult, the process in this sequel is expected to be easier.
