Capcom plans to evolve RE Engine into an AI-generation game engine

Capcom intends to transform its proprietary RE Engine into what the company describes as an "AI-generation game engine." This evolution is part of an ongoing overhaul known as the REX Project.

Programmer Satoshi Ishida outlined these plans during the Capcom Open Conference RE:2026 on October 2. Ishida identified three primary drivers for the REX Project: the massive scale of modern game data slowing down iteration times, the need for better multilingual and accessibility support for over 2,000 developers using the engine, and the necessity of building AI directly into the development pipeline rather than treating it as an add-on.

To address these challenges, Capcom is bundling several new systems into the project:

  • RE:Dox, which standardizes data processing across different formats;
  • RE:UI, designed to speed up tool development by separating appearance from state;
  • RE:Log, which replaces text-based logging with an ID-based system;
  • RE:Flows, a visual scripting tool that automatically converts to standard code;
  • RE:Runtime and RE:C++, featuring a reworked runtime core for batch processing large numbers of characters and an optimized execution layer.

The ultimate goal is to create an engine where AI can understand and generate code, run automated test plays to detect bugs, and support developers directly. Capcom has already started open-sourcing some underlying technology to assist with AI training. This aligns with previous statements from the company, which emphasized that generative AI should improve efficiency in routine operations while leaving core creativity to human developers.
