Drew Levin Explains Riot's Public Stance on Toxicity in League of Legends
League of Legends developer Drew Levin has published a detailed statement on his official X account, clarifying why he interacts so frequently with players and why Riot Games continues to publicly address toxic behavior. Levin stated that his primary motivation is improving the game, with a significant portion of his work dedicated to reducing negativity within the community.
According to Riot's estimates, fewer than 1% of League of Legends players consistently behave negatively regardless of circumstances. The company has spent the past year refining its ability to remove such users and intends to continue this effort. "League is too good of a game to let a small number of jerks ruin it for everyone else," Levin noted.
However, Levin emphasized that many players who occasionally display toxic behavior are capable of changing if given the right incentives and encouraged by community expectations. Riot's public communication serves three main purposes: encouraging rule-abiding players, signaling that toxic behavior carries consequences, and motivating those who genuinely strive to improve.
"We want to make it clear for people who are in the middle - not perfect, but they do their best - that being better is worth it," Levin added. He also called on the community not only to condemn bad behavior but to recognize and encourage players making genuine efforts to improve, noting that social pressure works both ways.
