Doom: The Dark Ages Sets Game Pass Record, Scores 91 on Metacritic

id Software's new shooter didn't just deliver a powerful release — it redefined benchmarks for Game Pass launches and elevated the studio to new heights.

Doom: The Dark Ages launched May 15, 2026 simultaneously on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and through Xbox Game Pass. According to Microsoft, it set a record for first-day Game Pass connections in 2026.

First Week: Stats at a Glance

On Steam, the game peaked at over 250,000 concurrent players in its first days — the best result for an FPS in the past two years. Metacritic average sits at 91 out of 100, making The Dark Ages the highest-rated Doom entry since the 2016 original.

Critics highlight the cinematic presentation and fundamentally different combat pace: unlike the breakneck speed of Doom Eternal, The Dark Ages features a heavier, "medieval" style built around shield, sword, and battering ram.

How It Differs from Doom Eternal

id Software deliberately stepped away from Eternal's aerial gameplay toward a grounded fantasy setting. The Doomslayer no longer dash-jumps across platforms — he carves through demon hordes using a saw-shield, battle flail, and a new shotgun. This divided hardcore series fans but attracted a new audience put off by Eternal's pace.

Game Pass and Microsoft's Strategy

The launch success validates Microsoft's day-one Game Pass bet. The company noted this model works for both attracting new subscribers and retaining the current base. id Software promises at least two years of support with seasonal updates and free modes.
