Warhammer 40K fans have specific questions about Blood Ravens' origins: an interview with the Dawn of War 4 director

For Warhammer 40,000 fans, lore and miniature painting often collide, leading to intense debates over specific details. One such point of contention is the visual identity of the Blood Ravens chapter—specifically, the color of their chestplate 'imperialis' (the winged skull). In a recent interview, Dawn of War 4 director Jan Theyson addressed this design choice and touched upon the chapter's mysterious origins.

The color of the imperialis has been a source of confusion for many: it appeared gold in the original Dawn of War, but shifted to black in Dawn of War 2 and 3. Because Games Workshop has provided limited lore regarding the Blood Ravens' specific gene-seed or origin, their appearance has varied across different media and White Dwarf issues.

According to Jan Theyson, the team at King Art didn't engage in lengthy debates to settle the matter. Instead of trying to reconcile the 20-year-old aesthetic of the first game, they opted to follow the most recent visual iterations seen in current tabletop editions and Dawn of War 3, where the marking is black.

The interview also delved into specific lore nuances. In the latest trailer, Captain Cyrus refers to a Dark Angels Space Marine as a "brother". While strict lore typically reserves the term "brother" for members of the same chapter—calling allies "cousins"—Theyson clarified that in this context, it simply refers to them being "brothers-in-arms".

Regarding the campaign's focus, the origins of the Blood Ravens will not be a major part of Dawn of War 4. The director noted that since the chapter is far from home on the wrong side of the Great Rift, their story will focus on survival rather than exploring their history or returning to their home world.

When asked about the potential mention of the Thousand Sons—a popular fan theory suggests a link between the two due to their similar number of psykers—Theyson only replied, "No comment." As of now, there is no confirmed information regarding the presence of Chaos factions in the game.
