Cloud Imperium delays Squadron 42 to 2027 to avoid GTA 6 launch clash

Cloud Imperium Games has officially postponed the release of its highly anticipated Star Citizen spin-off, Squadron 42, to Q2 2027. CEO and co-founder Chris Roberts explained that the delay is a strategic decision to avoid launching the title into the massive media storm surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6.

The studio's leadership emphasized that Squadron 42, which has been in development since 2013, requires a period of undivided attention from the wider gaming world. Roberts described the upcoming release window as an "attention buzz saw" dominated by Rockstar Games' highly publicized project.

"There is no way I want to launch my spiritual successor to Wing Commander... into the attention buzz saw of GTA 6," Roberts stated. He noted that while GTA 6 will not be available on PC this November, the sheer volume of coverage from outlets and content creators will leave little room for other major titles.

The delay ensures that Squadron 42, a project with over twelve years of investment, can secure the necessary focus to succeed. The game features an impressive cast including Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Mark Hamill, Andy Serkis, and Henry Cavill.

Despite the official delay, Roberts confirmed that a select group of original backers and long-time Star Citizen content creators will receive access to the game this October. Further announcements regarding the broader release schedule are expected shortly after this initial window.

This marks a significant shift from earlier statements made earlier this year by co-founder Sandi Roberts, who described the project as "imminently" close to launch. The marketing campaign for Squadron 42 is also distinct from the main Star Citizen title, aiming specifically at a broader audience rather than just the existing community.

Roberts acknowledged that many fans will be disappointed not to see the game launch at the end of this year. However, he maintained that the delay is the best course of action for the project, ensuring it has the opportunity to shine without being overshadowed by industry giants.

Squadron 42 remains scheduled for PC platforms and continues to be developed by Cloud Imperium Games, a studio known for its ambitious scope and crowdfunding success in the space simulation genre.
