Bungie returns to Destiny: studio outlines future plans
Bungie has unveiled a new vision for its future, placing the Destiny series at the core of its long-term strategy. The studio announced it is returning to development on the franchise and plans to restore content that was previously removed from the game through its
In a joint statement, Bungie head Poria Torkan and Marathon general manager Josh Deane revealed that the studio is returning to the Destiny series. A key part of this strategy involves "unvaulting" archived Destiny 2 content, allowing players to once again experience significant portions of the game's history that were previously made unavailable.
This restoration is expected to be more than a simple content rollout. Torkan and Deane noted that recent expansions for Destiny 2 have overhauled fundamental elements, including lighting, combat, and other underlying systems. Consequently, restoring older content serves as the first step in building a foundation for new stories and future games within the universe.
Regarding Marathon, the studio acknowledged that the game has not reached the player count they had hoped for and requires further evolution. Developers intend to focus on strengthening combat, world-building, and competitive tension while offering players more agency in how they engage with the gameplay.
In addition to updates for Destiny and Marathon, Bungie promised to increase transparency regarding development priorities and maintain more consistent communication with the community, particularly when project plans change.
