BlizzCon 2026 Announcements: StarCraft in 2030, Diablo 5, and WoW Forever

The BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony marked a major return for the franchise after a two-year hiatus. During the event, Blizzard president Johanna Faries unveiled a roadmap that spans years, featuring everything from a new StarCraft shooter to a radical reimagining of World of Warcraft and a new animated partnership with Netflix.

The biggest shock of the night was the reveal of Diablo 5, slated for a 2029 release. While the wait for the next installment is long, Blizzard is already expanding the Diablo 4 ecosystem. The game is confirmed for Switch 2 with a release scheduled for next week. Additionally, players can look forward to the Amazon class in Diablo 4 and the return of Deckard Cain in the upcoming Triple-Prime-Evil season.

For World of Warcraft fans, the announcement of World of Warcraft Forever represents a significant shift. This remastered and expanded version of the original vanilla WoW will lock players at level 60, allowing for a different kind of long-term progression. The roadmap also includes the Midnight Eclipse patch as the next major update for the MMO.

The most anticipated reveal, however, was the new StarCraft project. Led by Dan Hay (formerly of Far Cry), the game is described as an open-world shooter. Titled simply StarCraft, the project is aimed at a 2030 release. While the cinematic trailer showcased intense combat and high-stakes warfare, specific gameplay details and whether the focus will be co-op or multiplayer remain under wraps.

Other key highlights include:

  • Warcraft 3: A brand new 30-hour story campaign is available starting today.
  • Overwatch: A new hero, Doctrine—a techno support vampire—was revealed.
  • Hearthstone: A new expansion centered around the Old Gods arrives in October.
  • Heroes of the Storm: The game is returning, with Xal'atath confirmed as a new hero.
  • Netflix: An animated Diablo series is currently in development.
