Best Games of Summer 2026: GTA VI, Silksong, Subnautica 2 and More

The first half of 2026 was defined by major launches — Doom: The Dark Ages, Monster Hunter Wilds, and several big sequels. But the best is yet to come: summer promises at least three releases that will go down in history.

If Silksong launches this summer, it could be the most significant indie release in years.

GTA VI — Date Confirmed

GTA VI launches November 19, 2026 — Rockstar finally confirmed the date in April after a series of delays. The wait stretched more than three years from the first trailer, but all signs suggest the studio has genuinely finished: major retailers are now accepting pre-orders and the volume of marketing material has spiked sharply in recent weeks.

According to insiders, GTA VI will be Rockstar's largest open world to date. The game takes place in Vice City and the surrounding Leonida state. Confirmed features include two main protagonists — Lucia and her partner — plus a full multiplayer component launching simultaneously with the story campaign.

Analysts estimate the development budget exceeded $2 billion, potentially making GTA VI the most expensive media project in history.

Hollow Knight: Silksong — End of the Wait?

Team Cherry remains silent, but in early May, Achievement data for Silksong appeared in Xbox's database — a historical indicator that the game has passed certification and is ready to ship. Release timing is still officially unannounced, but industry press rates the probability of a summer 2026 launch as very high.

For those who have waited since 2019, this is particularly meaningful. Silksong promises a fully standalone experience starring the new protagonist Hornet, new game mechanics, and significantly larger scope than the original Hollow Knight.

Subnautica 2 — The Ocean Expands

Unknown Worlds Entertainment announced Subnautica 2 with 4-player co-op — a fundamentally new direction for the series. The first game became a cult classic precisely for its solo survival atmosphere, so the introduction of multiplayer generated mixed reactions from the community.

However, the demo shown at Xbox Games Showcase 2025 impressed: the new planetary ocean is much more diverse than the original, and the co-op mechanics don't feel forced — solo play remains a fully valid option. Early Access is expected in July 2026.

What Else to Watch This Summer

Monster Hunter Wilds: Title Update 3 adds the game's biggest expansion yet: two new Elder Dragons, a new biome, and the endgame "Hunt of No Return" mode. Full review in our separate coverage.

Forza Horizon 6 is still awaited at Xbox's June showcase — Microsoft has hinted at a big gaming event in the summer season. The series is long overdue for a new entry and the community is growing impatient.

Final Fantasy XIV: Voyage to the Stars — a major FFXIV expansion announced by Square Enix in 2025. Release planned for August 2026 with a full new continent and new job class.

Editorial Outlook

Summer 2026 will be remembered primarily as the lead-up to GTA VI — but not only for that. If Silksong launches this summer, it could be the most significant indie release in years. Subnautica 2 in EA risks dividing its audience, but the foundation for a major hit is clearly there.

Our advice: don't skip Doom: The Dark Ages — it's one of the best shooters in years, and you should play it now, before GTA VI takes over everything.
