ASUS GPU Tweak III 2.1.8.0 Adds Automatic Shutdown for Overloaded 12V-2x6 Contacts

ASUS has updated its GPU Tweak III utility to version 2.1.8.0, adding a critical safety feature called Power Detector+. This update introduces an automatic shutdown mechanism designed to protect compatible graphics cards from overheating and contact damage on the 12V-2x6 (formerly 12VHPWR) power connector. The software now monitors current distribution across all sixteen pins of the connector and can initiate a safe system shutdown if load on individual lines becomes critical.

How Automatic Protection Works

Before version 2.1.8.0, GPU Tweak III could only alert users to issues by displaying warnings in the interface or lighting up LEDs on the graphics card when current values were abnormal. However, such notifications could be missed during gaming sessions or rendering tasks. The new feature changes this approach: upon detecting a sustained threshold exceedance (default 9.2A per contact for standard cables), the system can automatically initiate a power-off.

It is important to note that this protection does not work instantly. Users can configure a delay before shutdown to avoid accidental triggers caused by brief load spikes. If elevated current persists for the set duration, the CPU and GPU will be safely powered down, allowing programs to close properly.

Technically, the function relies on Power Detector+ hardware sensors installed directly on the graphics card. This means the update does not enable protection for any cards with a 12V-2x6 connector from other vendors or older ASUS models — it works only on supported models in the ROG Astral and ROG Matrix series, specifically GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 cards.

Technical Details and Limitations

The 12V-2x6 connector is an evolution of the 12VHPWR standard, where mechanical parameters of contacts were changed to improve connection reliability. Nevertheless, the risk of improper installation or use of a damaged cable remains. The Power Detector+ function monitors each of the six power contacts of the connector separately. If one contact is overloaded while others operate normally, total power may appear safe, but local overheating will still occur.

Upon triggering protection, the utility displays a notification on the desktop or in the Windows system tray. However, automatic shutdown does not replace physical inspection: if a user ignores warnings and repeatedly restarts the system without addressing the cause (e.g., poor contact), this can lead to irreversible damage.

It is worth noting that the function is available only on graphics cards with corresponding hardware support. For other models or competitor cards, the update will not activate individual contact monitoring. It is also important to follow ASUS recommendations for calibrating threshold values: too low a limit may cause false triggers, while too high a limit may fail to respond to real threats in time.
