Apple Offers $19 Fix for iPhone Duo Screen Wear and Creases
With shipments of the first-ever foldable Apple device, the iPhone Duo, just weeks away, the company is ramping up its marketing efforts. During an interview, Apple Vice President of Hardware Engineering Kate Bergeron shared significant technical details regarding the inner display's cover layer, addressing one of the primary concerns of foldable technology.
The cover layer is designed to be replaceable, allowing users to "peel off that layer and get a new one," according to Bergeron. This engineering choice aims to provide peace of mind by ensuring the display surface can be refreshed as it wears down over time.
Beyond simple protection, this layer serves two critical purposes:
- minimizing the visibility of the crease where the device folds;
- reducing reflections via a matte finish to improve usability in bright environments.
For those covered by AppleCare+, the company will offer replacement of this layer for $19. It remains to be seen whether Apple will allow users to perform this replacement themselves through a self-service program or if the process will be restricted to Apple Stores and authorized service providers. We will get a clearer picture of the engineering quality once iPhone Duo begins shipping on October 23.
