Alienware finally fixes edge-dimming on OLED monitors, giving users more control
Dell Alienware has released a firmware update that allows users to disable the aggressive CPC edge-dimming feature on its AW3926QW OLED monitor. This fix addresses user frustration regarding screen brightness uniformity, though it may have an impact on long-term panel longevity.
Convex Power Control (CPC) is an OLED protection feature that automatically reduces brightness around the edges of a monitor panel to help prevent image retention and burn-in. However, this non-uniform luminance creates a vignette effect that is clearly visible to the human eye, especially when looking at a plain white background, such as in text editors or web browsers. Measurements on the AW3926QW showed significant deviations, with luminance dropping by up to 21% from the center of the panel.
While other OLED monitor brands give users the option to disable such features, Alienware's implementation was previously mandatory. This changed with the new firmware update, now available through the Dell support page, which introduces manual CPC control. This allows users to decide for themselves whether to prioritize visual uniformity or automated protection.

The longevity trade-off
Because CPC is a panel protection feature, disabling it may reduce the panel’s longevity around the edges, potentially causing image retention or burn-in sooner than with CPC enabled. However, it is important to note that disabling the feature does not make the monitor immune to burn-in; the screen’s center—the part users watch the most—should not see any difference in longevity with CPC either on or off. The original logic behind CPC was that static HUD elements in games are typically scattered around the edges, while the moving action remains in the center.

Upcoming support
The move follows discussions at IFA 2026, where Alienware’s monitor lead planner, Vincent Seajun Kim, confirmed the company was considering making this a toggleable feature. Following the AW3926QW rollout, reports suggest that the AW3226Q will also receive this toggle, potentially as soon as next week.
