90s-style sci-fi horror Derelikt launches Nov 13 on PS5
Derelikt, a sci-fi horror game inspired by the aesthetics of the late 90s, is set to launch on PlayStation 5 on November 13. Developer Philipp Jensen aims to recreate the unique atmosphere of the PSOne era while utilizing modern techniques to achieve a faithful retro look.
The game is set aboard the Von Neumann Outpost, located on an anomalous asteroid in Saturn's orbit. Players step into the role of an outside contractor tasked with investigating the fate of Excavation Team Delta, a group that went missing on the asteroid's surface. The environment is hostile: systems are failing, resources are scarce, and the survivors' conflicting stories—combined with the presence of a mysterious drone—create a pervasive sense of distrust and tension.

Derelikt is a solo project by Philipp Jensen, who sought to create a high-fidelity homage to fifth-generation console graphics rather than just a crude imitation. The visual style features 100% hand-painted textures and vertex colour lighting. To replicate the iconic affine texture warping of the era without sacrificing modern stability, the game employs dynamic geometry subdivision. Additionally, the title includes retro-style full-motion CGI cutscenes to complete the period-accurate feel.

Gameplay focuses on a blend of fast-paced gunplay and traditional survival horror elements, including resource management, exploration, and old-school puzzle solving. Players will have access to a standard arsenal of weapons, along with experimental prototypes and alien technology. Interaction with over a dozen characters is central to the experience, as each individual possesses their own secrets and agendas that can impact the player's journey.

Having been in development since late 2021, Derelikt offers players the option to toggle retro effects on or off to suit their personal taste. The game is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 on November 13, with a 10% discount currently available for pre-orders.
