Xbox reportedly plans to release new handheld gaming system next year

According to a new report cited by KitGuru, Microsoft is planning to launch its own Xbox handheld gaming system in 2027. This move suggests a shift in hardware strategy, as the launch of the next-generation console, reportedly codenamed Project Helix, is now being targeted for 2028.

First-party handheld vs. licensed devices

The report indicates that Microsoft aims to develop its own first-party handheld, rather than relying on licensed products like the ROG Ally, which served as a testing ground for the new gaming version of Windows. While specific technical specs remain unknown, the device is expected to be less powerful than both the upcoming Project Helix and the current Xbox Series X.

However, lower performance does not necessarily guarantee a lower price point. The current Windows-based handheld market typically targets the $1000 range, positioning devices far above the entry-level Steam Deck. This market trend suggests the new Xbox handheld could also carry a premium price tag.

Next-gen console price projections

Beyond the handheld, the roadmap for the next major console generation remains a topic of significant speculation. Current projections suggest that a next-gen Xbox could cost between $1200 and $1800, a substantial increase compared to the $500 price points common in previous console generations.
