Xbox COO Helen Chiang leaves Microsoft
Xbox has lost its first Chief Operating Officer (COO), Helen Chiang. The departure was revealed in an internal memo obtained by The Verge.
Chiang was a 21-year veteran of Microsoft, having previously led the Minecraft division before her promotion to COO in July. Following her exit, her responsibilities will be temporarily distributed among other Xbox executives.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the departure in a brief note to staff, expressing gratitude for Chiang's service. Microsoft has declined to comment on the specific reasons for her departure, stating that the company does not discuss individual personnel matters.
The COO position was established in July as a central component of the 'Resetting XBOX' restructuring plan led by Asha Sharma. This initiative aims to cut approximately 3,200 roles throughout the 2027 fiscal year and transition four studios to new management. As COO, Chiang held end-to-end P&L responsibility across content, hardware, platform, and services, reporting directly to Sharma.
This leadership change comes amid reports suggesting that Xbox may undergo further layoffs in November and January.
