Worlds Quarterfinals: LPL Civil War, Gen.G, DK, and T1 Set to Clash
Following a high-stakes Swiss Stage, the knockout phase of the League of Legends World Championship is ready to begin. While the LCK teams have managed to avoid early matchups against each other, the LPL is heading into the quarterfinals with three representatives.
The quarterfinals are scheduled to begin on November 4 at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center in Allen, Texas, USA. The matches will take place at the same venue used for the Swiss Stage. The opening match features an all-LPL showdown between TES and IG. For IG, this marks a significant return to the Worlds main stage after a long absence, while TES remains a frequent international contender that has often struggled to maintain consistency in knockout stages.
The LCK's path to the quarterfinals saw Hanwha Life Esports eliminated following a loss to BLG. However, Dplus KIA and Gen.G secured their spots with perfect 3-0 records, and T1 qualified with a 3-1 record. This outcome ensures that the LCK teams will not face one another in the opening round of the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinal schedule is as follows:
Gen.G enters their match against LYON as a heavy favorite. Since the adoption of the Swiss Stage format in 2023, Gen.G has been remarkably consistent during the group stages, boasting a 12-1 match record and a 92% win rate. However, the team has a history of facing unexpected setbacks in knockout stages, making the matchup against LYON—who narrowly secured their spot—a potential trap if Gen.G's form falters.
Dplus KIA, representing the LCK's 4th seed, secured their quarterfinal berth with three consecutive wins. While they have shown immense momentum in recent tournaments like the EWC, their early qualification means they will face a lengthy layoff before their match against BLG, raising questions about whether their match sharpness will remain intact.
T1 enters the quarterfinals with a 3-1 record. After a loss to DK in the second round of the Swiss Stage, they secured victories over CFO and MKOI. T1 has benefited from a favorable draw, avoiding several top-tier contenders and facing Karmine Corp (KC) instead. While 'Canna' Kim Chang-dong has been a standout performer for KC, T1 appears well-positioned due to 'Doran' Kim Chang-dong's strong form and overall lane dominance.
The semifinals will take place on November 8 and 9, leading up to the grand finals in New York on November 15.
